How to Get Your Volvo Ready for a Quebec Winter: The 2026 Guide for Gas, Hybrid and Electric

How to Get Your Volvo Ready for a Quebec Winter: The 2026 Guide for Gas, Hybrid and Electric

Cold mornings, slushy roads and short days ask a little more of every car. A few simple steps in the fall make winter driving calmer and safer, and they help your Volvo run the way it should until spring.

This guide covers the tire rules and the basics every Volvo needs, then the extra steps for mild hybrid (gas), plug-in hybrid and fully electric models.

Winter Tires: The Rules and the Dates

In Quebec, winter tires are mandatory from December 1 to March 15 inclusive. The rule covers passenger vehicles registered in the province, and your Volvo needs four winter tires in good condition. Drivers who skip it face a fine of $200 to $300, plus costs.

Not every tire with a cold-weather name counts. Only tires that carry the official winter pictogram, a mountain with a snowflake in the middle, or studded tires meet the requirement. The SAAQ also recommends installing them before December 1, since snow often shows up early.

All-season rubber hardens and loses grip below about 7°C, while winter tire rubber stays flexible down to -40°C. Many Volvo trims leave the factory on all-season tires, so a winter set comes first.

  • Mandatory period: December 1 to March 15 inclusive, four tires required
  • What counts: tires with the mountain-and-snowflake pictogram, or studded tires
  • Minimum tread depth: 4.8 mm across the full width when installed
  • Studded tires: allowed on passenger vehicles from October 15 to May 1

Check the age of your winter set, too. The last four digits of the DOT code show the week and year the tire was made, and older rubber grips less on ice.

Winter Basics for Every Volvo

Some steps apply to every Volvo, no matter what powers it.

  • Wipers and washer fluid: fill up with washer fluid rated for -40°C and replace streaky or torn wiper blades.
  • 12-volt battery: cold weakens batteries, and every Volvo uses a 12-volt battery for its electronics, so have it tested.
  • Tire pressure: pressure drops as the temperature falls. Check it once a month when the tires are cold.
  • Lights and visibility: make sure headlights, turn signals and hazard lights all work, and keep a snow brush and scraper in the car.
  • Brakes and fluids: have the brakes, brake fluid and coolant checked before the first big storm.
  • Emergency kit: pack a blanket, gloves, a small shovel, booster cables and an extra jug of washer fluid.

The Volvo Cars app helps here. It lets you warm the cabin, front seats and steering wheel before you leave, set a departure time or weekly routine, check tire pressure, lights and fluids, and reach Roadside Assistance 24 hours a day.

Mild Hybrid (Gas) Models

Volvo’s gas models, such as the XC40 B5 AWD, XC60 B5 AWD and XC90 B6 AWD, use mild hybrid powertrains. They still run on a gas engine, so the classic fall to-do list applies.

Start with an oil change if one is due soon, since fresh oil flows more easily on a cold start. Have the engine air filter checked at the same time.

Next, replace a dirty cabin air filter. A clean filter pushes more warm air across the windshield, so the defroster clears frost faster. Finally, have the coolant strength tested for the coldest nights.

Keeping the fuel tank at least half full also cuts down on moisture and gives you a reserve in a storm.

Plug-In Hybrid Models

The XC60 T8 plug-in hybrid offers 58 km of all-electric range, and the XC90 T8 plug-in hybrid offers 53 km. Cold weather shortens electric range on any battery, so plan for fewer electric kilometres between charges in January than in July.

The easiest fix is to plug in every night. Use the Volvo Cars app to pre-climatize the cabin while the car is still connected, so the heat comes from the outlet and your battery stays ready for the road.

Your plug-in hybrid also has a gas engine, so it needs the same oil, filter and coolant checks as a mild hybrid. On Volvos updated with the latest user experience, the Pure drive mode sits one tap away on the home screen, which makes it easy to stay electric on short winter errands.

Electric Models

Fully electric models, such as the EX30, EX40, EC40 and EX60, skip oil changes, but winter still changes how they drive and charge. Range and charging times both depend on outdoor temperature and battery temperature, so expect fewer kilometres per charge and slower sessions on very cold days.

A few habits make a big difference:

  • Charge at home overnight and schedule your departure so the battery and cabin are warm.
  • Precondition the battery before fast charging: a warm battery accepts power faster.
  • Use seat and steering wheel heat, which uses less energy than heating the whole cabin.
  • Plan charging stops with the Volvo Cars app, which filters stations by real-time availability.

Many electric Volvos are built for the cold. The EX40 offers a heat pump on its Core trim and includes it from the Plus trim up, and the EX60 includes both a heat pump and a high voltage air heater on its Plus and Ultra trims.

Winter Driving Aids Built Into Your Volvo

Slippery Road Alert appears on models such as the EX40, EC40, V60 Cross Country and V90 Cross Country. Heated windscreen washer nozzles and headlight cleaning are available on several models, and the EX60 adds wiper blades with integrated heating. Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control help on icy slopes, and all of these systems work best on a good set of winter tires.
